The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship is awarded annually to Elgin Community students who have demonstrated an active interest and meaningful involvement in the areas of human rights, civil rights, social justice and/or world peace.
Scholarships may also be awarded to students whose activities are exemplary and reflective of the ideals and life of Dr. King.
Eligibility:
- Must be a graduating student within the boundaries of School District U46
- including private and parochial schools. (2008/2009 school year graduate)
- Must possess a GPA of 2.5 or above
- Must possess a clear judicial record
- Must show sound character and leadership qualities
- Must have a record of service to the community (church, school, girl/boy scouts etc.)
Application Period/Timetable:
- Distribution of application materials: October 3, 2008
- Application Deadline: December 12, 2008
- Committee review of applications: January 6, 2009
- Committee interviews with top three applicants, January 9, 2009
- Notification to award recipients, January 12, 2009
- MLK program participation January 17/18, 2009
